Background of the Study
Journal clubs are educational forums that provide an opportunity for healthcare professionals and students to discuss and critique research articles. They have become an integral part of nursing education, particularly in promoting evidence-based practice (EBP), a key component of modern nursing (Okereke & Oladapo, 2023). Journal clubs encourage critical thinking, enhance knowledge of current research, and foster the application of evidence in clinical practice.
At Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, nursing students participate in journal club activities to review recent nursing research, discuss findings, and consider how these findings can be integrated into clinical practice. As nursing practice continues to evolve, the integration of EBP into patient care has become increasingly important. However, the effectiveness of journal clubs in fostering a culture of EBP among nursing students is not well-documented. Therefore, examining the role of journal clubs in promoting EBP at the university is essential for understanding their impact on students' learning outcomes and their preparedness to implement evidence-based care in their future careers.
Statement of the Problem
While journal clubs have been widely used in healthcare education, their effectiveness in promoting evidence-based practice among nursing students at Federal University, Birnin Kebbi has not been thoroughly examined. Without understanding how these clubs influence students' knowledge of EBP and their ability to apply research findings, it is difficult to determine the best practices for incorporating journal clubs into nursing education.
Objectives of the Study
1. To examine the effectiveness of journal clubs in promoting evidence-based practice among nursing students at Federal University, Birnin Kebbi.
2. To assess the impact of journal club participation on nursing students’ understanding of research findings and their application in clinical practice.
3. To explore the challenges and limitations of using journal clubs to promote evidence-based practice.
Research Questions
1. How effective are journal clubs in promoting evidence-based practice among nursing students at Federal University, Birnin Kebbi?
2. What impact does participation in journal clubs have on nursing students' ability to apply research findings in clinical settings?
3. What challenges and limitations do nursing students face when participating in journal clubs focused on evidence-based practice?
Research Hypotheses
1. Journal clubs are effective in promoting evidence-based practice among nursing students.
2. Participation in journal clubs improves nursing students' ability to apply research findings to clinical practice.
3. Nursing students encounter challenges in participating in journal clubs that limit their ability to engage with evidence-based practice.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nursing students at Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, and will assess the effectiveness of journal clubs in promoting evidence-based practice. It will not consider other educational interventions or teaching methods. Findings may not be generalizable to other nursing schools or healthcare institutions.
